International Teacher Education (ITE) Virtual Gathering
There’s No Place Like Home
Saturday, January 14, 2023
1 PM PT, 2 PM MT, 3 PM CT, 4 PM ET
Whether home is in a faraway land or on the campus of a great university, we all know that there truly is no place like home. Join the seven International Teacher Education Scholars as they take you down their personal yellow brick roads on their journeys to this country. The four first-year scholars (Ambika, Dona, Nesrin, and Vafa) will highlight their countries’ cultures and traditions, while the three second-year scholars (Anu, Darmini, and Janett) will open doors to their academic research and aspirations as they complete their master’s degree.
Sault Ste Marie’s Ontario Xi Chapter’s inaugural meeting on November 19th, 1977, was held in the penthouse of the Windsor Park Hotelwith the “whirlwind” Margaret Orlick, the Past Grand President of Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority, who was given the task of establishing new chapters for AΔK. Our charter members recall it was a bitterly cold and blustery day. As they stood shivering on the sidewalk outside the hotel after the ceremony, many wondered what they had gotten themselves into. But 45 years later our members are still supporting their fellow sisters, our community and the AΔK organization.
To celebrate our anniversary the Ontario Xi sisters met on November 21st in a lovely separate area at Giovanni’s Restaurant and spent two hours enjoying great food, wonderful memories, and conversation. Our historian, Vi Pigeon, brought along pictures from our 25thanniversary celebration. It was exceedingly poignant looking at those younger faces and at the pictures of sisters we have lost to the Omega Chapter over the years. They are always remembered.
Without exception we use our November meeting to bring our yearly contributions for our city’s Christmas Cheer fund. One of our members, Diane Marshall, has been the convenor of this huge endeavor for many years. It is a position which entails countless hours of planning and organization to assist more than 1700 households in our area to enjoy food and gifts at Christmas.

What a wonderful evening we had Oct 12th to celebrate Founder’s Day on A∆K’s 75th anniversary year! Congratulations to all those who helped plan the event. The Innsville was a lovely location, beautifully decorated with purple and yellow accents, along with lovely fall décor. The meals were delicious. The strong camaraderie among members of Psi, Rho and Sigma was evident. Ontario President Marg enjoyed the event so much, recognizing the connections between members. We certainly are “Sisters In Synergy”!
Congratulations to Psi member Barb for a very thought provoking presentation on National Toilet Day. This turned out to be a strong conduit for junior students to begin to have an awareness of World Understanding and caused us to consider how fortunate we are to live in Canada, but also a call to action to meet the challenges even within Canada.
The evening was a very special event as Psi Chapter initiated our new member, Jane E. Congratulations to Jane as we welcome her to our organization. The stars were aligned as Jane was the winner of the 50/50 draw, with the other half going to the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre.
A wide variety of events and resources are available to honour, participate in and reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, and beyond. Be sure to check in your community for additional activities.
