A∆K North Central Region Conference – Frankenmuth Michigan

Ontario was well represented at the North Central Region Conference in Frankenmuth July 17-21, 2022.  Roberta Casabon, Zeta, and Immediate Past NCR International Vice President sat at the head table throughout the week, as well as May Johnson, Psi, North Central Region Membership Consultant.  While missing out on her conference in 2021, Roberta was busy making AV presentations which were shown at this conference.  Mary presented 3 membership workshops which were very well attended.  Marg Nieradka, Sigma, our Ontario President, showcased A∆K CONNECT in a workshop, supported by Jane Lindsay, Sigma, along with several Technology drop in sessions. Ruth Shushan, Upsilon, presented a Diversity workshop with Mary Ann Gerdes.

Catherine Youngblud, Rho, and Diane Marshall, Xi, attended many workshops and were also instrumental in helping some of us with our ArriveCan apps!  Elizabeth McQueen, Psi, attended workshops and also assisted with technology presentations.

Jane Enright, who was our guest speaker at the Ontario Convention in May 2022, spoke at a general session about her book Butter Side Up.  Her message was very well received.

Marg and Elizabeth also attended a town hall meeting with International President Mollie Acosta and other officers to express successes and challenges.

We had time for fun too at a dinner of Ontario and Manitoba sisters, a riverboat cruise and a reception for Canadian sisters prior to the banquet.  We adopted 2 Virginia sisters, Emily and Lauren into our group as well.  Emily worked with Mary Johnson for 2 years in the Leadership Mentor program, all on Zoom, so this was the first time they met in person!  Emily did a great workshop entitled “Bis Sister, Little Sister” which encourages more experienced members to mentor newer members in A∆K, at the chapter level and beyond.  Emily’s 3 year old son attended as well and we all loved him!  We had a wonderful time connecting with our Manitoba sisters throughout the conference.  Manitoba did a fantastic workshop entitled Manitoba Magic!

Once you attend a Provincial, Regional and International event, you begin to see the far reaching benefits of belonging to Alpha Delta Kappa…so many opportunities, so many connections, so many friendships…the list is endless!

ON Psi Scholarship winner

In recognition of our ongoing educational partnership with Brock University’s Faculty of Education, Psi Chapter was pleased to present Andrew Zalewski with a $500 award for the 2021-2022 academic year. This is our 4th consecutive year honouring a graduating teacher candidate “who has exemplified overall excellence in their final teacher training year.” Additionally, this is the 2nd time that we have recognized a male graduate. Andrew received his B.Ed. in Technological Education with a specialty in Construction. Giselle Whyte and Mary Johnson, both of Psi’s Award Committee along with Linda O’Grady our 2020-2022 President presented the cheque and our traditional Certificate of Educational Excellence in July to Andrew who was accompanied by his young son, Jude in a beautiful local community park on the shores of Lake Ontario. We congratulate Andrew who now joins 3 other past recipients as we continue to uphold our partnership with this local university situated in our local Niagara Peninsula.

Thank you message

I wanted to thank you for the wonderful bouquet and the lovely message. It was very thoughtful and it warmed my heart. The bouquet’s color scheme matched my prom dress which was another wonderful coincidence. This definitely holds one of the top spots in my favorite graduation gifts. Once again, thank you for the bouquet and the lovely gesture.
Take care,Himani S.

Ontario Altruism Projects 2020-2022

ADK Ontario chooses two Altruism Projects to support at each Provincial Convention.  At our virtual convention in May 2020, delegates voted for Food4Kids and Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario to be the recipient of funds raised at the next convention.

Therefore at the Mary 2022 convention held in Oakville Ontario, members gladly supported our fundraising efforts.  In January 2022, tickets were sent to all chapters in Ontario for people to purchase in the chance to win a beautiful gold and black enamel necklace and bracelet set in the style of Van Cleef, which was generously donated by Phillips Jewellers in Hamilton.  Tickets were sold, one for $10 or 4 for $20.  Chapters returned their ticket stubs and money prior to the convention.  Tickets were also sold at the convention, with great enthusiasm!

Also at the convention, Psi Chapter sponsored a gently used book sale table with 2 paperbacks for $5 and hardcovers $5 each.  Without any difficulty Psi members gathered 250 books!  Convention attendees were happy to choose books for summer reading.

All proceeds from both of these projects went to Food4Kids and Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario.  In addition, the Provincial budget line contributes $500 each biennium to the chosen altruistic projects.  A formula of adding the funds raised at the convention plus the $500 from the Province, then divided 60% for the first project and 40% for the second project results in our contributions to these organizations.

At the convention a cheque was presented to Food4Kids for $2154 and a later cheque of $1436 was presented to Alzheimer’s. Both organizations were thrilled to receive these contributions!

Food4Kids is a program that provides a bag of nutritious food to children in need to be used at their home on the weekend.  Many schools offer breakfast and lunch programs, but a need was found for children on the weekends.  Several chapters volunteer for this organization throughout the week by buying groceries sourced for the best price, packing bags for students and delivering bags to school on Thursdays to be discreetly taken home by students on Friday.  The program is a resounding success meeting a critical need.  During the pandemic families received grocery gift cards in lieu of the bags of groceries.

Alzheimer’s of Ontario is very similar to the US Alzheimer’s Association.  In addition to the funds raised for Alzheimer’s at the convention, in Ontario, May is the month for the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s.  This year Ontario members counted their steps with $5433 raised to support research and care.

Our Provincial Altruism projects for 2024 were chosen at our recent convention.  Ontario members will gladly  support Shelter Movers and Feed Ontario.  As said over and over again at the Ontario 2022 Convention “It feels good to give!”
